Ghosts of a Lost Cause Film Screening and Q/A

For decades millions of Americans Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardians, and Marines have been forced to live with the ghosts of the Confederacy and a legacy of treason and white supremacy whilst dedicating their lives to service of the United States of America. The events of 2020 forced military leadership to reckon with the legacies of people like Lee, Bragg, and Jackson – the military led change in spite of hostile leadership. This workshop will follow two veterans who leveraged lessons learned from military planning, tactics, and leadership to foster community coalitions focused on resisting false lost cause narratives, the “good ol’ boy” network, and institutional discriminatory policies across the state of Kentucky. Utilizing the “Ghost of a Lost Cause” film as a backdrop, participants will learn about the Lost Cause’s origins, architects, enduring social impact, and why we must address white supremacy as a threat to national security.

Promoting Equity and Inclusion in Suicide Prevention Planning for a

Diverse Military-Affiliated Population

The focus on suicide in the military-affiliated population has increased significantly in the past twenty years. In 2020, the Department of Veterans Affairs reported that over 6,100 veterans died by suicide, and the Department of Defense reported suicide deaths of over 700 Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members and family members. The suicide rate among the military-affiliated population continues to be nearly twice the rate of the non-military affiliated community. It has also become increasingly necessary to consider the unique needs of diverse populations of service members, veterans and their families (SMVF). This need was identified as a critical implementation principle in the Public Health Strategy identified by the White House in 2021; the significant differences in risk of death by suicide among diverse populations requires tailoring solutions to diverse populations whenever possible.
